Directors, producers, and everyone else on set have a lot to focus on. That’s one reason it’s easy for them to miss signs that actors are uncomfortable, upset, or having a mental health crisis. That, and the fact that most are not trained to observe signs of distress and take action! According to research, Choreographing a scene of intimacy can be extremely challenging for most folx because they’re not sure how to go about it. These 3 qualities (breath, distance, and duration) are important to name and think about because they add structure to the scene and help it flow more naturally. When humans are stressed, one of the most basic things we can do to feel better is to laugh. That’s why people often make jokes during uncomfortable situations. And filming a simulated seggs scene? That can certainly be uncomfortable! While it is widely understood that an intimacy coordinator’s primary job is to support actors in creating scenes of intimacy, most people don’t realize that to do that we actually need to work with a ton of different departments!!! 1 of my jobs as an intimacy coordinator is to check-in with actors, providing you time and space to process your boundaries before getting in front of the camera. But this only works if you utilize this time appropriately! Unfortunately, Western actor training specifically teaches you to ignore your boundaries. Actors learn that being a “good” actor means saying yes to everything. If you have the opportunity to brush and floss more than 2 hours before your scene, I recommend taking it! If you want to use a waterpick, this is also your window of opportunity. The reason? Brushing, flossing, or doing other abrasive activities can cause micro abrasions on the gums. These abrasions increases the chance of transmitting blood-borne infections while kissing. Therefore, never blush or floss right before a scene! Overacting scenes of intimacy is often a big concern for actors. As an intimacy coordinator, it is my job to make you look and sound as realistic as possible!
